Abortion isn’t the problem.

In today’s politics we have never been more polarized. You either have to be pro life or pro woman’s choice. The problem with this is that both sound like things I would support. I believe that everyone has the right to life, and God (Ultimately) decides the way in which a man or woman dies. I also believe that God has given all men and women freedom of choice. That doesn’t mean that we won’t suffer consequences for those choices.

Let me be clear, I am not for abortion. I believe that every baby is fearfully and wonderfully made in the image of God. Sometimes God allows birth defects and bad situations to happen. Some of this is because we have chosen to go against God design and order; others he allows to mold us into better people in some way or another. Either way, I do not believe that “terminating a pregnancy” is the answer.

The issue here is that a child inside the womb of a woman is a life. I believe that life begins in the heart of God and when he allows a woman to carry a child it is a life. Sometimes those little babies do not make it into this world but stop there development prematurely. This too God’s allows from time to time. Our sin is the reason this happens – not specifically but in general. death is caused by sin and therefore this is also caused by sin. I am not saying that God has allowed this because of a mother’s sin (although that can be the case as it was with David and Bathsheba), but that sin is the cause of all death.

Abortion though isn’t the problem. We can attend pro-life rallies until Christ comes back but that does not deal with the main problem. We do not need to try to convince people that a child in the womb is a life. They already know this but are forced to override their own ideas to ease their conscience. The problem is not that they don’t know. The problem is that of the heart.

7. But the Lord said unto Samuel, Looke not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature, because I have refused him: for the Lord seeth not, as man seeth; For man looketh on the outward appearance, but the Lord looketh on the heart.

1 Samuel Chapter 16

Many times, well-meaning Christians will debate are argue about things that really won’t change the mind. If abortion is to be stopped in this country it will only be done through the gospel reaching the hearts of enough people to change this country. I am not saying that we should stand by and do nothing. I am saying that instead of trying to convince a person that we are right, maybe we should lower our aim a bit from their mind to their heart. Not their emotions – but the center of their being.

God sees all of our outward appearances, but he also sees the inward man. This is who we need to always strive to see. Instead of seeing the drunk on the side of the road begging for money to sustain his sin, we should see a man who bears the image of an almighty God. A man that God loves. Instead of looking at the person you casually work with as what ever they appear to be, we should see them as a person that needs to have their heart renewed.

Abortion isn’t the problem. It is a symptom of a deeper problem. A problem of the heart… even of our own heart.
