William Booth

The sign reads:

While women weep as they do now, I’ll fight; while little children go hungry as they do now; I’ll fight; while men go to prison, in and out, in and out, as they do now, I’ll Fight; while there is a drunkard left, while there is a poor lost girl upon the streets, while there remains one dark soul without the light of God, I’ll fight – I’ll fight to the very end.

Today, my pastor sent me this quote with the commentary “We disagree on some of his doctrines, but we could all use a little more of this fire in our hearts for those destroyed by sin.”

William Booth – known as General Booth by many – lived a life marked by passion for those souls who sin had destroyed. Being a methodist preacher as a young man in his hometown of Nottingham, England, He developed his doctrines and preaching style in their fashion amongst other popular congregationalist of his era.

While our doctrine would not line up in all points – including some of great importance – It is without doubt that William Booth had a zeal to reach the poor and needy with the Gospel of Christ. His fire was not his own but the fire of the Holy Ghost of God who impowered him to reach so many. While we should never compromise truth or holiness to see the lost saved and the hungry fed, it should move us with compassion as it did Christ.
