Double rainbow

Not the rainbow we saw

Coming home from an amazing three days with my wife at a marriage retreat, we were talking about all the things that stood out to us. Because I have a deeply ingrained hatred for turnpikes, we decided to take the extra hour to avoid all toll roads. On our way home we noticed that we were driving into a storm and started talking about the colors and how beautiful it looked.

All of the sudden a rainbow, or part of one, started to appear. We kept talking about it and a second rainbow could soon be visible. The longer we looked at it the more vibrant they both became. We were so delighted by the vibrant colors and captivated by its beauty. We probably spent twenty minutes simply admiring it, exclaiming over its beauty and clarity and just praising God for His handiwork.

We had turned the corner, the sun causing the clouds behind us to glow golden, and then the rainbow moved in front of the landscape. The rainbow was no longer behind the trees but in front of them! It started to come across the road. Pretty soon we could both make out the compleat double rainbow across the sky to the front of our car, almost seeing a compleat circle. It was the most incredible rainbow I have ever seen and I got to see it with the love of my life which made it all the more spectacular.

We started asking, “Why did God let us see this? What is the meaning of this?” I was thinking, rainbows are based on optics. If we weren’t in the same place at the same time it is very likely that we would not experience the same view of the rainbow. People that came to the retreat from the same church who left at the same time we did but took the faster toll roads home did not experience that rainbow. It was because we took the longer, windy, bumpy road that God blessed us together with this.

The night before, we had just spent a few hours talking with the pastor of the church that hosted the retreat about our call to India. He challenged us to be together on this. How we both needing to be in 100% and communicating together about fears and concerns. I believe this was God confirming what he was telling us. We need to be together on what God is showing us. We need to see the same things. We need experience Gods vision for us together.

The rainbow is a sign of the promise of God, but it is also a sign of the judgment of God. If we are on God’s side, the rainbow is a sign of protection. But, if we are not inline with God, it is a sign of his judgment.

Psalm 19:1 KJV
The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handywork.
