When you think of a pig, you probably don’t honk about a muddy mess. Pigs are know for wallowing in mud and are considered dirty. If you gave a pig a nice long bath and scrubbed him clean, a few hours later you would find him covered in mud again.
Dogs are the same way. You give them a bath and you turn your back and they are trying to get that smelly perfume off of their coat. This is the nature of many animals.
People are a bit different. Yes, some do prefer to be dirty all the time but a lot of people want to look nice. They will buy expensive clothes and brush or comb their hair, get a hair cut, spend hundreds of dollars on cosemtics, nail salon trips, etc. Most people, at least on some level want to look nice.
What is the difference between pigs and people? A different nature. Pigs get muddy because they want to be cool. They don’t have sweat glands and they need a different way to cool off. People buy nice clothes because they want to look cool. They will go through agonizing pain just to appear a certain way.
The difference is value. Pigs value being comfortable over looking clean. Most people seem to value looking a certain way instead of being a certain way.
1 Peter 3:3-4
3 Whose adorning let it not be that outward adorning of plaiting the hair, and of wearing of gold, or of putting on of apparel;
4 But let it be the hidden man of the heart, in that which is not corruptible, even the ornament of a meek and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of God of great price.
While these verses are directly talking to women, I don’t think it’s too hard to apply this to everyone. We need to not be as focused on the outward man, but rather the inward man. This body is corruptible, the inward man is eternal. That’s not to say don’t care about what you look like, or it is sinful to wear a necklace or to have nice things, but our focus should be on character.
Sometimes, I think people would be better off if they were a little more like pigs.
Okay, maybe not.
