Problem With Math

I am so thankful that my school days are over. I still love to learn, and I desire structure in that as well, but I am happy that I get to have control over most of that. When I was in college, Calculus II was the most confusing for me. My teacher wasn’t very good at explaining the concepts and because of that, it was hard to understand. I was also taking a lot of other classes so it was hard to give it my full attention. Because of this, I ended up, I am embarrassed to say, getting a D in the class and had to retake it. I believe it is the only class I had to retake but I felt like a complete failure at the time.

The problem was that I did not understand the concepts. The teacher that I had wasn’t very helpful, so the concepts were mysterious to me. The next time I took the class, with a different teacher, it was like a whole new experience. it was still hard but I was able to grasp the concepts more easily and ended up getting a B. Even though that didn’t feel like an achievement at the time, I understood the material much better.

Math can be hard to grasp at times, and so can biblical concepts. The Bible tells us that the things of God are spiritually discerned, therefore we cannot comprehend all of the Biblical concepts with our mind. We need the Spirit of God to teach us what the Bible says. If we are trusting in man to teach us we may be able to get somethings from the Bible but we may end up getting a D or worse. We need to have a good teacher – and who better to teach us the Word of God than the author?

The Bible is a book to teach us about God. Outside of the general revelation of the creation – it is the only way we can understand anything about God. The Bible tells us that God is one God, but it also tells us that God is three. At first glance this seems like an impossibility.

Deuteronomy 6:4-5 KJV

Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God is one Lord:

And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might.

How can we love that which we do not understand? God wants us to understand him to a degree but he also wants us to pursue him with even when we cannot understand him.

1 John 5:7 KJV

For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one.

God is one God. Every person of the Godhead are 100% God in everyway. God was not created this way, he always was this way. It is not as if God split himself into three parts. We understand them as persons that are distinct from one another in role or job, but are in complete unison with one another in every way. We know that God is self existing, he needs nothing. A basic need of mankind is companionship. God declared it is not good that man should be alone. This is not true with God. God does not need companionship for He communes with Himself. God does desire a relationship with his creation but this desire is for our good, not to better Him.

Like Calculous this can be quit confusing especially if you already have ideas about God that are wrong – and I am sure we all do. We need to believe that the Bible is true both when it tells us that God is one God and also when it tells us that He represents himself in three distinct persons. I know this about God, not because it makes since to me but because He told me in His Word.

If my favorite color is blue and I ask you what your favorite color is, you might say red. I don’t have to understand why you like red more than blue. To me, blue is the best color ever. But I know that to you, red is better than blue. I know this because you told me, not because I understand. The finite cannot comprehend the infinite, sometimes we struggle with basic math.
