Poetry ~ Amy Carmichael; No Scar?

Hast thou no scar?
No hidden scar on foot, or side, or hand?
I hear thee sung as mighty in the land;
I hear them hail thy bright, ascendant star.
Hast thou no scar? Hast thou no wound?
Yet I was wounded by the archers; spent,
Leaned Me against a tree to die; and rent
By ravening beasts that compassed Me, I swooned.
Hast thou no wound?

No wound? No scar?
Yet, as the Master shall the servant be,
And pierced are the feet that follow Me.
But thine are whole; can he have followed far
Who hast no wound or scar?

Amy Carmichael (1867 - 1951)

Amy Carmichael was missionary to India in the late 1800’s. She is best known for her work in rescuing temple children. These are children, usually girls, who were given to “the gods” and were trafficked by the “spiritual leaders” for profit. Thousands of young girls and babies were rescued and cared for. There was a time that a terrible plague hit the nursery that housed many babies. She writes that babies died everyday, sometimes two in a day. Yes, Miss Carmichael had wounds and scars. She bore the marks of her Savior. The last verse I find especially compelling:

“Yet, as the Master shall the servant be,
And pierced are the feet that follow Me.
But thine are whole; can he have followed far
Who hast no wound or scar?”

We are called to Follow Christ, this means we will have to face trials and pains. Isn’t this what Baptism and the Lord’s Supper signify? To be partakers of his sufferings.
