Poem ~ Amy Carmichael, Surprising Love

How often, Lord, our grateful eyes
Have seen what Thou hast done;
How often does Thy love surprise
From dawn to set of sun.

How often has a gracious rain
On Thine inheritance
When it was weary, wrought again
An inward radiance.

Thou who upon the heavens dost ride,
What miracle of love
Brings Thee more swiftly to our side
Than ever thought can move?

Our love is like a little pool;
Thy love is like the sea;
O beautiful, O wonderful
How noble love can be.

Amy Carmichael

God’s love is eternal because God is eternal. As this poem states, God’s love is like the sea. Meaning it is infant, it is endless and unfathomable. Sometimes we forget about the love of God even though it is always present. There are times in our life, that we have lost track of how God loves us, and then are surprised to find it. Sometimes in a sunrise, sometimes in a sunset. Sometimes we find the love of God in the eyes of one of his creations. We can say things like, “I cannot imagine that God loves that person.” Yet we know he does. The person who is strung out on drugs, shivering in the bitter cold, caring only about their next high – God loves them. The person who has grown Cold to God because of personal sin, they destroy the people in their lives that they once declared they loved, only to gratify their own base desires. God loves even them. Yes, the love of God does surprise. It runs contrary to our own sinful nature. I am so glad, that God’s love never fails.
