Its… Providence

Fate and destiny are words that describe an unseen unknown force, that predicts all or certain aspects of life. There is some force that has predetermined what will happen in your life. It has also been called Kismet. The idea seems to be heavily linked to Karma. Karma is a Hindu belief that the universe – call it Brahma or Energy or what have you – has a law that everything you do has a resulting effect on your life. If you do something good you will be rewarded; if you do something bad you will be punished.

This runs contrary to what the Bible teaches. I do believe that the Bible teaches something called providence. God does predetermine certain things for us. He decides what family we are born into. Weather we are rich or poor. God has given us all free will to make choices. He does have a desire for us to follow. We all mess up and choose wrongly at times, but God has mercy to allow good things to flow into our lives. This is providence.

Since God represents himself of the father of those who believe on Jesus as God who suffered and died for us, He loves us as a father. God also is the loving creature of the world, and John 3:16 states that “For God so loves the world that he gave his only begotten son, that whosoever believeth in him shall not perish, but have everlasting life.” Because of God’s Caracter he wants to provide for us. This is like a father wants to provide for his children. This is the providence of God.

Fate, Destiny, Kismet and Karma don’t make sense at all. They are all focused on what we do or how this unknow force controls our life for better or for worse. There is a personal God who loves and looks over us. He blesses the just and the unjust, the good and the wicked. He does so because he is good. He blesses the wicked to help them see that he is good so that they will repent of their wickedness and turn to him. He also allows terrible (from our perspective) things to happen to those who trust him and know him. Not because he isn’t loving, but because he wants to grow those who trust in him and he will eventually become glorified in it. As a father lets his children struggle through math or language and allow them to be tested over those subjects, not because he hates them, but because he wants them to grow. So do I believe in “fate or Destiny?” No, I believe, and the Bible teaches, Providence.
