prayerlessnes is spiritual Idolatry

Being a father has changed my life. It is one of my greatest joys. When one of my girls comes up and asks me to read a book to them or tell them a story I am delighted. The Bible tells us that God is also delighted when we come to him and pray. Proverbs 15:8 “The sacrifice of the wicked is an abomination to the Lord, but the prayer of the upright is His delight.”

God is delighted when we come to him and ask him to do something. He is waiting to provide our needs, he is there to give us wisdom and he longs to show his great power so that he will be glorified. Unfortunately, it seems that believers in God, born again, quickened by the holy ghost of God, made righteous by Christ’s shed blood, joint heirs with Christ, made the children of God, neglect a critical time in fellowship with God.

Why do we fail to pray? There is an old saying that says failing to plan is planning to fail. I would add that failing to pray is praying to fail. There are many reasons in which we may fail to pray, but they all boil down to one. We simply don’t see the need. We have things under control. We are too proud to ask God, he probably wouldn’t answer anyway right? To bring it to one word, pride. We don’t pray because of our pride. God hates pride. It is possible to pray in pride, but that is not true prayer. Prayer in itself is an act of humility. It is confessing that you are powerless, helpless, not strong enough, not wise enough, not anything enough. You need the Lord God Jehovah to be your everything. You bow down in humility. You make a request and put yourself completely at the mercy of God, because you already were even if you didn’t recognize it.

prayerlessness is the sin of Pride, but it is also the sin of Idolatry. No, you may not be bowing down to an image made with hands, you are bowing down to your own understanding. When we fail to pray, we are really saying that we have no need of anything God has to offer. We say that we have everything under control. We have all the wisdom we need, we have all the answers, we’ve Got it.

When we fail to worship God, we are really worshiping ourself. This is blatant idolatry. When we fail to pray we are saying that we are our own master, our own Lord. We are seeking the will of the One who made us and created us. We have broken the commandment to pray without ceasing, and to give thank in everything, for thankfulness requires prayer. Prayerlessness is a grave son, and one that most professing Christians are guilty of.
