Four things you might not know the Bible teaches about Mary

1 – Mary is not the focus of the Bible.

Mary, the mother of Jesus is mentioned by name less than 20 times in the New Testament. Joseph, Mary’s husband, is only mentioned about 12 times.

While Mary is an important figure in the New Testament, being the mother of Jesus, she is never the focal point of the text. Jesus is the main character of all scriptures. Jesus is mentioned over 900 times in the New Testament. And he is prophesied about hundreds more in the old testament. There is only one direct prophesy about Mary. Isaiah 17: 14 tells us that a virgin shall conceive . The only reason Mary is important is because of her relation to Jesus.

II Timothy 3:16&17 All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works.

The Bible doesn’t tell who Mary’s mom or dad are, what kind of life she lived, how she met Joseph, who her best friends were or anything. The Bible doesn’t focus on her because the story isn’t about her. We know who Jesus was, who his parents are, what tribe he is from, who his disciples were, how he lived, how he died and how he rose again.

The Idea of II Timothy is that we have everything we need in the Bible to make us complete in God. We don’t need to know any more about Mary than what the Bible tells us.

John 20:31 But these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name.

This is the focus of the gospels. Mary is not the focus; Jesus is.

2 – Mary had 7 children (at least)

Marry was not a virgin her whole life. The Bible does teach that when Jesus was conceived Marry was a virgin, and Jesus was conceived in Marry by the Holy Ghost.

The Bible also tells us that though they were Espoused (or engaged), Mary and her husband Joseph did not consummate their marriage until after Jesus was born. Jesus had at least 4 brothers, and we know their names. Mark 6:3 says:

Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary, the brother of James, and Joses, and of Juda, and Simon? and are not his sisters here with us?…

The Jewish leaders didn’t believe that Jesus was God. Even Jesus’ brothers didn’t believe at first. It is the wild imagination of someone who has an agenda to push to tell people that Mary was a virgin her whole life. This is impossible base on what the Bible teaches. There is a clear reason that Christ was born without an earthy father, it is because he was God. Mary was just a woman who God used. Was she blessed? absolutely; was she God? Absolutely not.

Not only did Jesus have brothers, he outright tells people that they can be more blessed than his own mother by obeying his words.

Luke 11:27-29 …as he spake these things, a certain woman… said unto him, Blessed is the womb that bare thee, and the paps which thou hast sucked. But he said, Yea rather, blessed are they that hear the word of God, and keep it.

Yes, Mary was blessed above other women because she had a relationship with Jesus that was unmatched, but that doesn’t mean she lived her whole life a virgin – nor would that make her more Holy because Hebrews 13:4 says:

Marriage is honourable in all, and the bed undefiled: but whoremongers and adulterers God will judge.

Being a virgin wouldn’t make her more spiritual – it is a ridiculous dogma. We know she had at 7 children. Were these all miraculous conceived? Not a chance.

3 – Mary was not sinless.

The Bible never teaches that Mary was sinless, it actually teaches the opposite. Romans 3:23 says “For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;”

This Includes Mary, but it excludes Jesus because it says in Hebrews 4:15-16

For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin. Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.

The only person to ever live a perfectly sinless life was Jesus Christ. The reason he died on the cross was to take away our sins, that required a perfect sacrifice.

Jesus was perfect not Mary.

Jesus died for sins, not Mary.

Jesus is God, Mary is not.

There is only 1 person who stands before God on our behalf, and that is Jesus, not Mary.

I Timothy 2:5&6 For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus; Who gave himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time.

Mary needed a mediator just as much as you and I need one.

So many people promote Mary to God like status and they worship her as if she were God. The Bible teaches that Mary should not worshiped.

Luke 4:8 And Jesus answered and said unto him, Get thee behind me, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.

Praying to Mary is a form of worship. You cannot think that God is happy with this, when it flies in the face of Holy Scripture.

4 – Mary can’t get you to heaven.

Mary had broken God’s law like every other person and she needed a savor to deliver her from her sins.

John 14:6 “Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.”

Jesus doesn’t say you can get to God through me or Mary, he said He was the only way. Mary had to get to God by trusting in Jesus, she knew she wasn’t good enough to get to God on her own and she herself was trusting in her Son to save her from her own sins.

It may or may not surprise you to know that all 4 of these points go against established Roman Catholic Dogma and many protestant confessions as well, However, it is the clear teaching of the word of God. So many people are being led to Hell because they follow the teachings and traditions of men rather than the Word of God.

Mark 7:13 Making the word of God of none effect through your tradition, which ye have delivered: and many such like things do ye.

So, who are you trusting in? Are you trusting your own good works to get you to heaven? Are you trusting in the works of a church to get you there? Maybe you believe that if you pray really hard to Mary that she will talk to God on your behalf. Maybe you trust in the “traditions”.

The Bible is crystal clear. Works don’t save us, going to church doesn’t save us, Baptism does not save anyone.

Titus 3:5&6 Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost: Which he shed on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Saviour;

It is Jesus and his sacrifice on the cross alone that saves!

Jesus claimed to be God and he proved it by raising from the dead. Many hundreds of eyewitnesses saw him after he raised from the dead and spent their lives telling the world about what they saw. Many were even killed for their faith in Jesus but would not recant their testimonies. They had absolutely nothing to gain and everything to lose.

I beg you to consider the testimony of the Bible and “work out your own salvation with fear and trembling.” Because one day “…every knee should bow… every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord…” Philippians 2:10-12

Jesus is the only way, even Mary had to confess this. Salvation isn’t hard, it is impossible.

Acts 4:12 Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.

Romans 10:9&10 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.

You cannot confess something you do not believe to be true otherwise you are lying. Turn away from what ever you are trusting in, repent of the sins you have committed against a Holy God and turn to Jesus Christ alone for salvation,
