A friend of mine has been going through a court case recently and certain motions were filed that he does not want to be approved. I was talking to him and as we talked, he was explaining how the judge would approve of this because of this reason, or he thought that this fact did not look good for the specific motion. He wanted to get the judge to rule in his favor naturally, so he was going to seek that ruling by filling his own motions.
While this is natural, and even needful, we – as Christians – need to be mindful that before we go and seek the favor of a man (whether a judge or a friend) we should first seek the favor of the one that matters most, God.
Proverbs 29:26 KJV
“Many seek the ruler’s favour; but every man’s judgment cometh from the LORD.”
The one we need to be concerned with is the Just and Holy God of Heaven. He, ultimately, passes the verdict and he does it on our behalf and for our good if we are saved (Romans 8:28). We should be a people enthralled with the endless pursuit of God and his favor above all else. Christian’s lives should be centered around seeking God with the whole heart and trying to please him.
Modern Christianity tends to treat God as if he were there to grant us the desires of our hearts – almost like a gene in a lamp, or the idol of Santa Clause – when in reality, we are made to bring glory to God and sing his praises. We are designed to serve God, not for to Him serve us. Let us start our day by seeking His face and asking Him how we can best serve Him, then He will judge in our favor because we have a heart that wants what He wants.
