A few days ago I went into my workshop and noticed the worst odor known to man. I knew instantly what it was and immediately felt the tears raising in my soul. I keep a freezer in the back of this workshop and, because we live on a farm and process our own meat, it was full of various cuts of meat. The stench hit my nose the second I opened the door. I had removed something from the freezer about a week prior to this day and the early spring heat had done its best to attract every fly within a country mile.
Angered with myself I hurried to compost all the things in the freezer. I knew I had a bad attitude while I was doing it, but I tried to rejoice. It wasn’t working. I tried to thank God that it was all the meat in the freezer that failed and not something worse. I didn’t feel thankful. It wasn’t until that evening that I was praying with my wife that I was truly able to thank God for the freezer going out.
The reason is simple, it reminded me that it is only stuff, and not as important as the souls of men. Looking back on cleaning up the meat it reminded me of a verse:
Isaiah 66:22-23
23 And it shall come to pass, that from one new moon to another, and from one sabbath to another, shall all flesh come to worship before me, saith the Lord.
24 And they shall go forth, and look upon the carcases of the men that have transgressed against me: for their worm shall not die, neither shall their fire be quenched; and they shall be an abhorring unto all flesh.
This verse is talking about the end of the world when Jesus is on the throne and all the saved come and somehow see the punishment of those who have rejected Christ. The stench that will be in the air is a thousand times worse than what I delt with, I am sure, on top of the heartache that this isn’t simply animals, but eternal souls who have been created in God’s own image. It is good to have a proper perception of what is really important in this life.
