Light of the World

Since it is summer time, bugs are out in full swing! ticks have been a regular pest and the mosquitoes are ragging. Moths and June bugs are also hanging around and the flies are no exception. As I am sure you know, Bugs love light sources. They fly to the light; sometimes to there own peril. Light is supposed to be an attractant, but it can also be a repellant.

Christ is called the Light of the world in John Chapter 1. He is supposed to attract all the world to him. But sometimes this has the opposite effect. When Jesus was talking to Nicodemus he explains that he came to the world to attract men to him, but not all men will accept him. Here is what Jesus said.

John 3:14-21 KJV

14And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up:

15That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life.

16For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

17For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.

18He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.

19And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.

20For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved.

21But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God.

Christ was lifted up when he was hung on the cross, and anyone who looked upon him faith, has been saved. He attracted the attention of many looking for salvation, but those who deny him are constantly repulse by the truth. It is like a magnetic field; Christ attracts the positive but repels the negative. Condemnation is upon all men that do not accept the light the Christ offers, their punishment is that they don’t have the light to guide them. They prefer the darkness because their deeds are evil. If you are doing evil things, you do not want them to be known. If you do not want people to see your deeds, there is a good chance your deeds are evil. Unless you turn to God with your evil deeds and confess them to him, you will never have the means to leave those deeds behind. Your life with always be characterized by your evil works.

This is true for the saved and the unsaved. It is possible for those who have tasted of the salvation of God to turn back to the mire and fall into sin. The difference is that as born-again people we should be consumed with truth. We should have already come to the light for salvation, and we should use the word of God to lead us in the way in which we go. God should be guiding our steps. If we have fallen into sin we must confess and forsake it, have God shine his light upon it!

I believe we should pray for God to search us – as David did in Psalm 139:

23 Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts:

24 And see if there be any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting

Our hearts are so desperately wicked, we cannot even know our own thoughts. We need God to reveal our flaws to us. We can deceive ourselves into thinking we are good. We can ignore our own faults and focus on others. This is a grave mistake. We need to spend time with God, and allow him to show us our heart, our thoughts, and reveal the wickedness that masquerades as piety in our heart.
