My four-year-old found out that the fair was in town. She was excited to go. She told me as soon as I got home from work. Her eyes were bright with hopeful anticipation. That night she reminded me that the fair was town. She had one request… she wanted to ride the Ferris wheel. I told her that I would think about it and we went to bed. That morning at 5:00, I was getting ready for work, and she was up thinking about ridding the Ferris wheel. I am not sure how much sleep she got, but her hopes and desires were to ride that ride.
In life, we all have things that we desire, but when it comes from a pure heart our heavenly father loves to grant these requests. I want to allow her to go on the Ferris wheel but there are some things preventing it. Her size – many rides have a minimum size requirement. She gets afraid of things, so she might not want to go once she sees it. The cost was out of sight; I cannot afford to blow that kind of money. My size – I am a big guy, and I would not be able to get on it with her. There are many other unknown things. I thought about how much she wanted to ride the Ferris wheel, but I did not think it would work out. My wife decided to tell her while I was at work. She was disappointed but she took it like a champ.
When we come to God with our desires, we understand that he is all powerful, so nothing prevents him from granting us our desires, but us. It may not be the best thing that we desire. It may hurt us. We may not have a pure motive in our desire. There are so many things that prevent God from granting us our desires. Sometimes, God disappoints us. He tells us no. But when God tells us no we need to learn how to delight in him.
Psalms 37:4 KJV
Delight thyself also in the Lord: and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart.
As I drove to work that morning, I wanted to give my daughter her desire to ride the Ferris wheel, but I didn’t know that it would work out. A simple request, but many variables. So, I talked to God. I asked him to allow her to ride a Ferris wheel. We told her no on Friday, the Ferris wheel was too big and too expansive. On Saturday we loaded up all the kids and headed to a kiddie park an hour away from our house. They have a baby Ferris wheel and she loved it. She was a bit afraid at first, but her and her sister got in the small Ferris wheel and went around and around for about two minutes. They road many other rides and we all had a great time. Thank you, God, for answering our prayers with your infinite knowledge.
